Section II

The minority ethnic groups often been stereotyped and are underrepresented. In developed places, such Europe and the USA, the minority ethnic group, the non-whites, are stereotyped offensively, which brings a few consequences.

  •       The dangerous savage – the media use movies/other entertainment to show that the non-whites are usually the villain, or who aim to harm women and children. This stereotyping causes society labeling non-white people as criminals.

  • ·         The childlike primitive – the media uses images and other sources to show that the non-whites are uneducated, homeless, and defenseless and needs the whites to stay alive. This stereotyping shows that the whites are in a higher class than the non-whites, and they are the ones in power.

  • ·        The rich, evil tyrant – news reporting and films shows that non-white people are often corrupted leaders. This stereotype suggests that non-whites are not good rulers.

  • ·    The clever, devious trickster – the media use films to show that some minority ethnic, like Chinese, are clever, yet they use their intelligence for evil purposes.

As a consequence, the stereotyping towards minority ethnic groups in white countries through different forms of media, like movies and news reporting, manipulates society by suggesting that the minority ethnic groups are more likely negative, are criminals and/or are in a lower class. These stereotyping makes the minority ethnic groups treated differently, including in job appliances due to underestimation. This leads to discrimination.

However, media representation towards ethnicity may have changed. There are several reasons that made non-white people less stereotyped. The first reason is that more employment is now available in the media for minority ethnic groups. This creates producers, editors and other rulers of the media to respect their presence by not offending them through its media content.
The second reason is that purchasing power of minority ethnic groups has been recognized. They are the ones that help media and advertisers to promote products. Growth of the media also influences the change in media representation. With different medias, like the Internet, multi-channel television and so on brings opportunity for people to create their own content if they reject or dissatisfied with mainstream media. As a result, some media contents may contradict.
The government also took place to create policies regarding the media. Government may create laws to increase minority ethnic groups in media workplace to reduce discrimination and more employment.

As mentioned earlier (http://mediaethnicity.blogspot.co.id/2017/04/the-main-issues-of-media-representation.html), the fact that “a research found only 6 percent of the characters were African-American while the other 89 percent were white people” makes society believe that the ones ruling and more superior are the whites compare to the non-whites. This may lead to discrimination towards non-whites people.

“Many of the television programs only have white characters and just some African-American characters”. This fact makes the non-white people appear less in the media, in which most media content are composed and based on the mindset of white people. This fact makes non-white people’s opinion less considered by the society.
